Tom walked almost to the edge of the cliff.

Rural towns and villages have grown and will always grow. They do so best where building sticks to their edges and respects their character.

这句话里的两个their都指“乡村的”;

building在这里指“建造新房”;

stick to是“紧跟,跟在...旁边”;

...is on the edge of XX

其解释为:close to the point at which something different, especially something bad,可以翻译为“濒临”。

Some firms are on the edge of collapse.

on the edge of...也可以用on the brink of...或on the verge of...

Some firms are on the brink of collapse.

Some firms are on the verge of collapse.

at the leading / cutting edge

其解释为:the most important and advanced position in an area of activity, especially technology,即,(技术上的)前沿,尖端。比如:

Huawei is at the leading edge of 5G technology.

Leading-edge technologies for military and computer applications(名词短语)

Mention smartphones, and most people will think of their drawbacks at once, such as screen addictions for children. But a more fitting image may be that of a double-edged sword.

Mention smartphones, and most people will think of their drawbacks at once, such as screen addictions for children. But a more fitting image may be that of a double-edged sword, which does more good than bad.

They can give humans an edge, helping them do work that calls for empathy and human interaction—traits that are beyond machines.

They can give humans an edge.

“they”指的是上文(原文)中提到的social skills(社交技能);

helping them do work是伴随状语。

that calls for empathy and human interaction

traits that are beyond machines.

Even though cheating carries a punishment of up to seven years in jail under Chinese law, there is no end to the schemes some will use to try to gain an edge over the millions of Chinese youth competing fiercely for admission into the country’s top universities.

gain an edge over…

A well-written CV is a key factor in gaining a competitive edge over your rivals.

Huawei is relying on the 5G technology to give it a cutting edge.

(1)像文中一样,表示“滑向某种(不好的)形势”,如,the world is edging closer to war, America is edging closer to an economic recession, South Korea is edging to an outbreak.

China is edging ahead in technology fields. Biden is edging ahead in the opinion polls.

on the edge / verge / brink of...

The world/country is edging closer to XX。

at the leading / cutting edge

leading-edge

edge

cutting edge

用法:give sb an edge, gain an edge over...

double-edged sword

6. 其它:

call for 可替换 need, require,表示“需要”;
